Welles Line report, 1921, 1941-1943, 1957.

Typed report, maps, photographs, research notes, photocopies of old documents, and copies of legal proceedings relating to mapping errors caused by disputes originally made in 1680 over the western boundary line of Hempstead and adjoining Far Rockaway. An engineering investigation and historic study of the problem was made by the Topographical Bureau engineer, Charles T. Chatfield.

Assistant Engineer in the Division of Street Openings of the Topographical Bureau of Queens. Chatfield conducted research concerning legal title to lands in which the government of New York City was involved. This case involved land at Rockaway Park fronting Jamaica Bay, and was argued in the mid-1930's.
